Spitting Happens. Understanding, Responding and Redirecting

Bee Ready Series - Behaviour
Spitting Happens. Understanding, Responding and Redirecting
Webinar Description
When a child spits, our instinctive response may be “Stop spitting!” But while this tells the child what not to do, it does not necessarily teach them what they can do instead.
This practical webinar explores how SNAs and other school staff can move beyond repeated correction and instead ask: “What might this behaviour be telling us?” Participants will explore possible functions of spitting, how adult reactions can unintentionally reinforce behaviour, and how calm, low-pressure language can support regulation and learning. Using realistic school scenarios, the session introduces a “Say This Instead” approach. The focus is not on ignoring unsafe or unhygienic behaviour, but on maintaining a clear boundary while teaching an alternative behaviour that meets the child's underlying need.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Explore why children may spit and recognise possible communication, emotional, sensory, attention and environmental factors behind the behaviour.
- Look beyond the behaviour by considering what happens before, during and after spitting rather than assuming deliberate defiance.
- Use supportive language and redirection instead of relying solely on commands such as “Stop spitting.”
- Match practical alternatives to the child's need, while maintaining appropriate boundaries around hygiene, safety and respect.
