Bee Ready Series - Behaviour

Smearing. Understanding the Need, Protecting Dignity and Responding Safely

Webinar Description

Smearing can be distressing for the child, their family and the staff supporting them. However, the behaviour should not automatically be viewed as deliberate, attention-seeking or defiant. A calm and curious response can reduce shame and help adults identify what the child may be communicating or experiencing.

This webinar explores the possible medical, sensory, communication, emotional and environmental factors associated with smearing. Participants will learn how to observe patterns, reduce potential triggers, teach alternative communication and develop consistent toileting and personal care supports.

The session will also examine how SNAs and other school staff can respond safely while maintaining the child’s privacy, dignity and participation in school life.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe possible medical, sensory, communication, emotional and environmental contributors to smearing.
  2. Use respectful observation to identify patterns without assuming the child’s intention.
  3. Plan proactive supports for toileting, communication, sensory access and predictable routines.
  4. Respond safely and consistently while protecting dignity, infection control and safeguarding responsibilities.
