Have your say! The teaching & learning of Irish in English-medium schools
Limerick Education Support Centre is pleased to support the Department of Education in organising two school community consultation events on Irish in schools that teach through English (one for primary schools and one for post-primary schools).
These events are part of a national consultation on the development of an Action Plan to support the teaching and learning of Irish in English-medium schools. It is intended that the Action Plan will be published during 2025 and implemented during the two-year period, 2026-2027.
Each event will involve up to five primary schools / five post-primary schools that teach through English. The events will provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, school leaders and particularly pupils, from those schools, to share their experiences with the Department and each other on the teaching and learning of Irish.
It will also provide an opportunity to identify ways to make the learning of Irish more rewarding for children and young people, to foster positive attitudes towards Irish and increase the use of Irish in schools.
Each consultation event will be held in a hotel venue in Limerick.
The Primary School consultation will take place on Friday April 4th from 09.30 to 14.30
The Post-Primary consultation will take place on Thursday April 3rd from 09.30 to 14.30
Refreshments and a hot lunch will be provided each day.
Each school is asked to send:
- A senior Leader (Principal/Deputy/AP)
- 2 teachers (substitution cover will be provided)
- 6 pupils
- 3 parents/guardians
Experienced facilitators will facilitate the day primarily through English and will use a range of approaches and activities so that there is active participation by participants throughout the day. Those attending from individual schools will have the opportunity to have conversations with each other as members of the same school community and with parties from other schools during the day.
The event will be a valuable opportunity for individual schools to reflect on and consider the perspectives on Irish of children, parents, teachers and school leaders in their schools. The main points and topics that emerge from the activities and conversations between the school communities will be shared with the schools and participants after the event. The outcomes of the discussion will inform the development of the Department’s new Action Plan for Irish.
It is also intended that each participating school will receive free resource materials to support the teaching and learning of Irish.
