Introductory Workshop to Restorative Practice

How do you live the values you hold? How do you teach while upholding those same values? It's easy when things are going well. We do it automatically. But what happens when we come under pressure? Too often it's all too easy to lose sight of our values and resort to culturally punitive patterns (and get stressed ourselves in the process).

Restorative Practices is a values-based philosophy and a set of practices that can be applied in classrooms and in your wider life. They have relationships at heart and, crucially, help transform conflict when it arises. The are proactive in nature, using elements like restorative language and Fair Process, to build and maintain good relationships ("it's easier to build a good relationship than fix a broken one"). And when issues arise, there are also reactive elements such as, restorative language, and the famous restorative questions.

This 2 hour workshop will:

  • provide you with an overview of the use of RP in schools (and in your wider life)
  • explain the difference between a punitive and a restorative mindset
  • give people an introduction to some of the basic RP skills and practices
  • disspell some of the myths that can arise with RP (e.g. too soft, or takes too long)
  • explain how RP can be used in your teaching and instruction, as well as when challenges arise
  • explain what steps are needed to continue this to the next step
