This workshop is suitable for SEN Coordinators and English Language Support Teachers in Post Primary Schools
This two-day, face to face workshop provides an introduction to and overview of English Language support in post primary schools. Participants will interact with and explore an array of tools, websites, resources and activities that can be adapted and replicated in their own language support classrooms.
Areas of focus include
- Identifying and assessing EAL learner needs using assessment materials that are linked to the Common EuropeanFramework of Reference (CEFR)
- Aligning language support to the CEFR benchmarks
- Setting targets, recording and monitoring progress
- The use of the Continuum of Support to align the level of EAL support with the needs of the EAL learner
- Linking Language support to the curriculum
- The use of home languages as a facilitative tool to learning English
- Developing CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency)
- Promoting Autonomous Language Learning
Tutor: Narrell Byrne
WTC Management Committee Member, Former EAL Coordinator at Mount Sion CBS, currently on secondment to the PDST as Post Primary EAL Advisor. Narrell has a keen interest in developing practical guidance, processes, and adaptable resources schools can use to ensure every EAL learner feels a sense of belonging, can access the curriculum, and experiences success.
